This is a very common chutney used almost in all the houses of south India. So I have shared for the few unknown friends, try it.
Ingredients:
1. Channa dhal - 2 tbs
2. Red chillies - 4-5
3. Tamarind - a small piece according to your taste
4. Salt - as required
5. Grated coconut - 1 tbs (optional)
6. Oil - for frying and seasoning
Seasoning:
1. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
2. Jeera - 1/2 tsp
3. Curry leaves - 1 twig
4. Hing / Asfotedia powder - a pinch
Method:
1. Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan, add channa dhal, red chillies and fry to golden brown.
2. Once it got fried to golden brown, add tamarind and salt. Just leave to cool for room temperature. Transfer all the ingredients to the blender and grind to a paste, not so smooth.
3. Transfer it to a serving bowl. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, jeera, curry leaves and hing finally. Once they got popped mix it with the chutney.
4. If you are using coconut, you can add that finally while frying channa dhal.
5. Serve with hot idly, dosa and sooji.
note:- The same procedure with the same ingredients you can prepare urud dhal chutney. Substitute urud dhal instead of channa dhal. You can even prepare by taking equal portions of both the dhals.
You can grind this as a powder without adding water and use this as a chutney powder. Mix it will water when ever you want.
